Fort Stanwix National Monument, Rome, NY

Fort Stanwix National Monument is a rebuilt Revolutionary fort.  It is the only American fort that never surrendered during the Revolutionary War.  The British put the fort under siege but the soldiers were able to keep the British at bay for 21 days.  At this time the British troops retreated because the American forces were getting reinforcements and the British commander felt that they could not prevail.  This particular piece of land was important because it was an overland portage site between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean.
