Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, Dayton, OH

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio is where the Wright Brothers lived and developed their ideas for the firsts airplane.  The brothers had a number of bicycle shops and it was from this background that they were able to engineer the necessary ideas and parts for their airplane.  They would spend most of the year preparing for their trip to Kitty Hawk, NC, usually in November or December.  They would take the train out there and do their test flights for a week or two and then head back to Ohio with new data to ponder.  They eventually built a catapult driven system to launch the test airplanes in a nearby field in Ohio.  This helped their research immensely, because they did not have to rely on trips to the coast and on favorable weather.  After almost 5 years of experimentation, they were able to fly and steer their plane with consistent results.  Then they shut down all the testing and went about getting patents for their invention, this took over two years, but in the end, they had invented something that would change the world.
