Winona Lake, IN

We spent a week at a family home on Winona Lake, Indiana.  Winona Lake was home to a well known chautauqua in the late 1800s.  People came by train from Chicago and spent their time enjoying the lake and other activities.  Later the area became a location for numerous Bible conferences including famous speakers such as Billy Sunday, Dwight Moody, and musician Homer Rodeheaver.  The conferences ended for the most part in the 1980s and the area fell into disrepair.  In the late 1990s, some businessmen, who had grown up in the area, began to purchase and rehab many of the old homes and public buildings.  The area is now home to a collection of shops and restaurants known as The Village at Winona.  Winona Lake has always been a lovely place to spend a day, or a week, on the water.  The Hoffman family (Shannon's parents) has owned the home for over 40 years and we have spent many wonderful days here.  The house, known as Cozy Cove, turned 100 years old this summer and we celebrated with 100 cupcakes and some old fashioned 1919 family pictures.
