Bent's Old Fort, La Junta, CO

Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site is a reconstructed 1840s fur trading post.  It is actually quite spacious, two stories and well appointed with a dining area and other rooms for relaxing, including the men's lounge that included a bar, a billiard table and card tables.  The fort employed a doctor, a blacksmith, and many other trade workers to keep the post running.  There were extra rooms for guests that happened to pass through.  And in answer to the question that popped into your head when you read Bent's Old Fort, yes, there was also a Bent's New Fort.  The old one burned to the ground under some questionable circumstances, but no one knows for sure what really happened to cause the fire.  A new fort was built at a new location. The main thing that the fort traded was buffalo hides but they also took in other furs and stockpiled goods to trade in return.
