Fort Scott National Historic Site sits close to the Kansas and Missouri border. It was another fort that was involved in much of the history and warfare of the country from 1842 to 1873. Companies of mounted soldiers known as dragoons accompanied settlers on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. They also tried to keep the peace during the Mexican wars, "bloody Kansas" and Civil War periods. They were also involved in the Indian wars. The fort itself is a lovely setting with large two story buildings with shaded porches. The parade ground has a octagonal shelter covering the well.
