Clements Stone Arch Bridge, Chase County, KS

We happened upon Clements Stone Arch Bridge in rural Kansas.  It was built in 1886 and is the largest stone arch bridge in Kansas.  It is no longer used or even safe to cross with a vehicle.  But it is beautiful.  We scrambled down the riverbank to see the bridge from the lower side.  We also walked across the top of the bridge to check out the river and the bridge itself.  Everything is overgrown with weeds and grass but you can still see what it looked like.  The arches are 28 feet wide and the top of the bridge is 10 feet across. While it still feels solid under your feet, you can see from the river view that some of the rocks are moved out of place and there is a large crack in the structure.  Still a testament of amazing engineering for the time period.

The bridge is cracking up...

The debris in this tree was about 8 feet up.  It was from recent heavy rains that caused flooding all over the area.

The other side of the bridge ends in a field.
