Fort Larned, Larned, KS

Fort Larned National Historic Site in Kansas is a 1860s military fort built of sandstone.  It was built on the Santa Fe trail to provide security and provisions for the wagon trains that traveled west to begin a new life.  The fort is stunning, built in traditional military style for the time period, with a center parade ground and all the housing and other building built in a square around it.  This fort is not reconstructed but has remained mostly intact due to the sandstone construction and the remote location which kept people from reusing the building materials for their homes, etc.  The stone that comprise the buildings are etched with the names of people who came upon the fort in the after it was abandoned.
