Although the Klondike Gold Rush took place in Alaska, Seattle became the launching place for many of the gold rushers. The soon-to-be miners often bought their supplies and such in Seattle and then took a ship from Seattle to Alaska. Then they had to take a long difficult overland journey over ice and snow covered mountains. And in the end, only a very small amount of miners ever struck it rich. Many of the would-be miners gave up mining and made more money outfitting and feeding the miners instead. Seattle has a well-done visitors center where you can learn more about the beginning of the Klondike Gold Rush. They even have a scale where you can find out how much money your weight in gold would be. (If your are willing to step on a scale in public...)
