Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, Greeneville, TN

Andrew Johnson was our 17th president, he became president after Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford's theater.  He held many other political offices before becoming president, including governor of Tennessee.  Johnson is best known for being impeached by Congress.  He and the members of Congress did not get along because Johnson wanted to be gracious in the restoration process of the southern states after the Civil War.  The congress wanted to punish the southern states.  The end result was Johnson's impeachment by congress.  However, he was not removed from office, as this is a separate step and congress could not get the two thirds majority vote to do so.
