Greenbrier, WV and the Greenbrier bunker

We visited the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV.  This hotel has been a luxurious getaway since the early 1900s.  The pictures from the lobby are proof of that.  However, the interesting thing about the Greenbrier is that after WWII, the US government decided to build a secret underground bunker to house the Congress in case of a nuclear attack. The building of the bunker was hidden by building a new wing on to the hotel at the same time.  In 1992, a reporter published a story about the bunker and it became public knowledge.  Now you can tour the bunker.  Very cool, interesting part of history.  Definitely go if you get a chance.

The bunker...  (you weren't allowed to take cameras/phones in there, so these photos are from the internet)

Blast door that separated the bunker from the hotel.

Blast door covered with a wallpapered screen, so that people wouldn't see it.  The first room of the bunker was used as an exhibit hall and was a designated fallout shelter, so people were allowed in there, they just didn't realize what it's intended use was.

Exhibit hall, first part of bunker.

One of two large auditoriums that could be used for House and Senate meetings.

Delivery tunnel for trucks and supplies.

Nuclear decontamination showers.
