Great Smokey Mountain National Park, TN

Smokey Mountain NP, in Gatlinburg, TN is kinda cool for us because this is where we went on our honeymoon clear back in 1985.  We spent some time driving up some of the roads and hiked up a trail to Clingman's dome.  The sign said that it was a half mile, very strenuous hike.  And they were right.  It was a paved path and didn't seem "that bad" when you looked at it.  But it was steep and you just kept going up and up.  The rise in elevation was over 300 feet in that half mile, but we made it (with a few rest stops), and this was the reward at the top.

While in Smokey Mountain NP, we also crossed the Appalachian Trail, so we took a short walk down it.  Now we can say that we have walked "part" of the 2100 miles of the trail.  The Appalachian trail starts in Georgia and goes all the way to Maine.  It is very popular to start on the southern end about this time of the year and take the trail all the way to Maine.  We saw several hikers doing just that.
