Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Southeast Wyoming

Fort Laramie National Historic Site in southeast Wyoming is a well known piece of history.  This fort was originally established as a trading post in 1834.  It became an important military post on the Northern Plains and remained in operation until 1890.  This fort was a stop on the Oregon and Mormon trails.  The fort was a place were the wagon trains could rest, repair, and replenish their supplies.  The fort was involved in the Indian wars as well.  There are many stories out of Fort Laramie.  It was a large and impressive fort, with dozens of buildings to explore.  The most famous building was the unmarried officers quarters, nicknamed "Old Bedlam" after a British insane asylum.  It is said that there was a lot of noise and chaos associated with "Old Bedlam", being a bunch of young officers with nothing better to do but get rowdy on occasion.

The covered wagon represents the Oregon trail, the hand cart, the Mormon Trail, both passed near the fort.
