Oregon Trail Ruts, Guernsey, Wyoming
This place was so amazing. We had read that there was a place nearby where you could still see the ruts from the Oregon Trail. The Oregon Train Ruts in Guernsey, Wyoming were unbelievable. They were probably 5 to 6 feet deep into the sandstone as they topped a hill. We thought that maybe we would have to use our imagination a little to even be able to see them. Not so. The stone had been worn away by the thousands of wagon wheels that had passed over this spot.
In this same area is a place called Register Cliff. It is a place where thousands of people who passed through the area carved their names, the date and their hometown into the sandstone cliff. It was a register of the people who passed through on their was to make a new life for themselves and their family.

I had no idea they would be that deep Do you think they could put the wagon wheels in them
ReplyDeleteI think that the whole wagon went through the rut area. The ruts just kept getting worn down deeper and deeper with so many wagons passing over the same spot. The sandstone is soft and just wore away.
